Discussing competency-based, time-variable education in the health professions are Olle ten Cate, one of the guest editors of a recent supplement to Academic Medicine on this topic and Academic Medicine editor-in-chief David Sklar and senior staff editor Toni Gallo. They cover how the argument for time variability came about and what a time-variable education model looks like as well as the concepts of entrustment and assessment in such a system.
